A MANAGED re-opening of Lynnbottom tip with reduced capacity has taken place today (Monday), as restrictions during the coronavirus pandemic start to ease — with Afton Marsh scheduled to re-open on the weekend.

While a re-opening of the Island’s household waste and recycling centres (HWRCs) has begun, the number of visitors is limited within 30 minute periods.

Visitors must first book a slot online by visiting www.iwight.com

Residents are able to book a time slot to go to one of the recycling centres, with slots available to book for up to four weeks in advance.

Households will only be able to book one slot within a two-week period to ensure as many people who need to visit can do so.

There are ten slots available per half-hour at Lynnbottom, and five per half-hour will be available at Afton Marsh from Saturday, May 16.

Booking slots is available from 10am to 5pm.

Only a limited number of items can be taken, and no general waste, rubble, soil or DIY waste will be accepted on site.

No vans, trailers or pickup trucks will be admitted in order to maintain flow of car-sized vehicle waste volumes only.

HWRC operatives will not be able to assist removal of waste from vehicles as they normally would, in order to maintain effective social distancing.

Isle of Wight County Press:

Tim Bamford, the CLA’s lead on fly-tipping, said: “We welcome the re-opening of recycling centres — especially as many areas have seen worrying incidents of fly-tipping during lockdown.

“As businesses begin to re-open, especially hardware shops and DIY stores, household waste will be building up.

"It is essential that recycling sites are open and councils must provide all means possible to facilitate the responsible disposal of rubbish."

Items that can be taken to the tips are limited to:

• Garden waste

• Asbestos and plasterboard with a permit only.

• Waste electronics and electrical equipment no larger than an under-counter fridge.

• Batteries

• Wood (man-made and natural)

• Hard plastics.
