They embraced street parties and posed for pictures as they celebrated the end of the war in Europe.

Some Isle of Wight residents were still away fighting, including in the Pacific, where the war rumbled on.

On the Isle of Wight, however, tables were laid and food was prepared to mark a moment of light after years of darkness.
