CHARITY boxes were stolen and windows were smashed when a Newport bakery was broken into last night (Monday).

Scarrots Lane Bakery, owned and run by charity organisation, Community Action Isle of Wight, had both its shop and office damaged.

"Not only does this mean that food has been wasted and doors, windows and equipment damaged, but it also means that the charity will lose much needed money," said a spokesperson for the bakery.

"All profits from the bakery support the charity in the work it does."

The bakery continues to supply village shops around the Island, as well as providing a home delivery service to residents in the Newport area.

"Wholesale deliveries still went out this morning, and will tomorrow," said Mike Bulpitt, chief executive of Community Action IW.

“Not much was taken except a till and some charity boxes, as there isn’t a lot to take, but a lot of damage was caused with smashed windows, broken doors, broken light fittings and bakery products strewn about the floor.

"After a morning clear-up, we’re ready to go again this afternoon, but it’s just a bit dispiriting, given everything else going on."

Investigations are ongoing and CCTV is being checked.

Anyone that has any information should contact the police.

UPDATE 7.13pm: Abby Burgess, owner of the Retreat Cafe on Scarrots Lane, has confirmed the premises was also broken into on Monday night.

She said: "We were broken into last night along with the bakery. We had our door smashed in and our stock taken and dumped in the car park."
