A WAR memorial in Newport has been repaired by a local business — after vandals had defaced the silhouettes of four soldiers.

The memorial, comprised of four silhouettes of fallen soldiers situated near Coppins Bridge Retail Park, had been spray painted by vandals.

Islander, Sean Berryman, of SMB Painting and Plastering, has since offered his services and restored the memorial to its former splendour.

In a post on Facebook, the business said: "Today we did our part for the community.

"Some mindless vandals did this to a memorial for a family of heroes during the war.

"All sorted, free of charge , protected for eight years to come."

Isle of Wight Police have been approached for a comment.
