MAKING sure youngsters and older students stay fit and healthy during the coronavirus restrictions is the mission of Isle of Wight PE teacher Gareth Bricknell, who has set a unique back garden sporting challenge.

Gareth, PE teacher and Blue House head at The Bay CE School, Sandown, has been setting a variety of challenges during the crisis.

His latest is for pupils to come up with ten different sports that can be played in the back garden — all you need is a bin, a ball, whatever sports equipment you have at home and a creative mind, with parents encouraged to join in the fun!

Gareth, who plays for the Cowes Sports first team, which plays in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier, explained: "As a PE teacher at The Bay CE School and a keen sportsman, I know how important sport is — not only for keeping fit and active, but for mental well-being.

"I have been setting challenges for students and their families to keep them active, in between completing the work they have been set.

"I have been really impressed with all of the attempts from the school community.

"It’s great to see families getting involved and being creative with the challenges."
