Islanders have been asked to take part in a national campaign to support the heroic work of our NHS staff.

The 'Clap for our Carers' campaign will see people up and down the country stop at 8pm this evening (Thursday, March 26) to thank the NHS workers who are fighting the coronavirus outbreak.

As part of the national salute, residents will stand on their doors, balconies and in their windows and clap for a minute as a gesture of appreciation for all the hard work they are doing.

The Isle of Wight Council has tweeted it will be joining in too.

Citizens in lockdown of Spain and Italy have been holding similar displays of thanks.

Classed as key workers, NHS staff have been working tirelessly to treat those who need it most, with retired medical professionals being asked to return to service to help the overwhelmed medical provisions.

Earlier this week, the government issued a call to arms for 250,000 volunteers to help the NHS — in 24 hours that target was smashed.
