ELDERLY shoppers were treated to a bouquet of flowers at Sainsbury's in Newport this morning.

Store staff made the presentation to cheer up those facing concerns over the coronavirus, and the fact shelves have often been sparsely supplied with essentials due to recent stockpiling.

Store manager Charlie Bird said: "For me in this crisis this was the best part of the job, seeing the smile on people's faces.

"We need to keep spirits up during this difficult time."

Charlie and his team handed the flowers to elderly and vulnerable customers who visited the store to do their shopping.

The move was put in place last week as a measure to allow those most prone to the virus to make sure they can obtain vital supplies.
