A DRINK driver was caught after police stopped him on suspicion of driving without insurance.

William Barnaby, 35, of no fixed address, admitted drink driving and driving without insurance at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court.

Vivian Ducie, prosecuting, said: "The police stopped the vehicle on Medina Way in Newport because they suspected the driver had no insurance.

"When they spoke to him they could smell alcohol. He was taken to the police station where he was found to have an alcohol in blood reading of 103. The legal limit 80."

Barry Arnett, for Barnaby, said: "There was no suggestion of any poor driving. The police stopped him simply because they wanted to check his insurance.

"He is currently homeless and is trying to get himself some form of stable accommodation."

The magistrates gave Barnaby a 14-month driving ban and ordered him to pay a £120 fine.

He was also ordered to pay court costs of £85, and a surcharge of £32.
