A ISLE of Wight woman has told the County Press that a good samaritan stepped in to give her hand sanitiser, as she searched Newport's pharmacies in vain.

Sheila Barvir, 81, has a lung condition and could not face standing in the queue at her third pharmacy.

Instead, a fellow shopper unexpectedly handed Sheila a bottle from her own handbag.

Panic buying has led to empty shelves on the Isle of Wight, as the County Press has reported.

Sheila says she is very grateful to the woman who helped her.

She has written: "Amongst the sad scenes of empty supermarket shelves and customers fighting over - believe it or not - toilet rolls, a little ray of kindness came my way.

"I was trying my third pharmacy in Newport, in an attempt to find hand sanitiser, only to be told that I should be at the store when it opened at 8am and stand in a queue which would stretch down the street - but they would sell out within 15 minutes.

"I am 81 years old with a lung condition, so I just said thank you and left.

"A little while later, in another shop, there was a tap on my shoulder.

"[A woman asked] 'Are you the lady who was just asking for hand sanitiser?'

"She reached into her bag [and gave me hers, saying] 'I’ve got some more at home.'

"This lovely, generous and thoughtful person said we must all look after the most vulnerable."
