THE instrumental and drama categories got underway at the 90th annual Isle of Wight Music, Dance and Drama Festival this week.

More than 1,800 entrants are vying for trophies in a variety of characters over the course of the three-week event.

The speech and drama section of the festival saw success for Daisy Hewitt from St Helens. Daisy, of the Island Free School, recited Going Home by Jean Kenward to receive a distinction and the Marigold Blake Cup in the 12 and 13 years girls’ verse speaking class.

Adjudicator Vivienne Redford described Daisy’s performance as 'mature beyond her years'.

Daisy was thrilled with her trophy which capped the end of a week which also saw her place second in four other classes.

There was stiff competition for Amelie Jones, 11, of Wootton, when she took part in the 11-year-old girls’ prose speaking class. She gained a distinction and 87 marks to receive the J.M. Longhurst Cup for her performance of Girl With A Pen by Elisabeth Kyle.

The extract imagined how Charlotte Bronte had come up with the name Jane Eyre for her famous heroine. Adjudicator Vivienne Redford was particularly impressed with Amelie’s natural delivery style and how she used her face and eyes to bring the story to life.

Another success story belonged to James Nettleton, of Ryde Academy. Despite only recently starting studying speech and drama he won the festival medal for his recital of an extract from Sabriel by Garth Nix in the boys’ 12 and 13 years prose speaking.

Jeni Law, who teaches both Daisy and James, said: "I’m very proud of all my students for their amazing successes this week.

“I’m so proud of Daisy, she has come such a long way from the shy girl I met a few years ago.

”I’m thrilled for James because he has worked so hard and it’s always good when hard work is rewarded. It takes courage to stand on a stage and recite a piece to an audience of strangers."

Harry Spencer-Whitcombe's prosperity is likely to necessitate investment in a larger trophy cabinet, the teenager having received six awards for his singing.

The 16-year-old's accomplishments included distinctions in the 14 to 16 years girls/boys Disney song, 14 to 16 years Christmas song, and 14 to 18 years accompanied folk song categories.

Harry, who is trained by singing teacher Tressa Lambert attends the Island Innovation Sixth Form where he is studying music technology, drama and computer science.

He has been entering the festival since he was four years old.

Eight was the magic number for Haylands Primary School singing sensation Jazzmin Childerstone, of Ryde. The eight-year-old, who is a member of Fusion Arts Academy, made the top three places in all eight sections in which she was entered, including two top spots.

She said: "I have really enjoyed the festival so far and am looking forward to when the dancing starts."

Among the highest marks of the past week were awarded to Evan Greszczyszyn Rico in the verse boys nine years and Sara Hesse in the verse girls 14 to15 categories, with both receiving scores of 89.

Students of Fusion Arts Academy have enjoyed widespread success in the vocal categories, securing 23 wins, 12 runner-up spots, and nine third place finishes.

In one of the most popular categories, the Newport Parish Council Challenge Shield was won by Priory School Junior Choir with a commended mark of 86, up against six other primary school choirs. In total, 294 children took part in the class.

Adjudicator for the category, Ben Costello, said: "Once again I had the pleasure of motorbiking over to the Isle of Wight this month to adjudicate.

"The week was filled with solos, duets, trios, and wonderful choral contributions from the Island's schools and other performing groups. Taking place in lovely venues, this festival once again provided a chance for Island talent to shine, on par with some of the best festivals at which I have adjudicated."
