A DISQUALIFIED driver led police on a car chase through Ryde which ended when he collided with a parked car.

Isle of Wight magistrates heard how Keifer Troy Bentley, 22, of Pallance Road, Northwood, led police on a chase from the McDonalds drive-through on Brading Road, through Ryde town centre before crashing on Smallbrook Lane.

Bentley admitted dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, failure to stop and three counts of driving over the drugs limit for cocaine and cannabis.

Ann Smout, prosecuting, said: "On March 1, staff at the McDonalds drive-through in Ryde were alarmed at the smell of cannabis and presentation as Bentley drove through the queue, this time in a different car.

"Staff delayed his order and called the police. As Bentley sat in the car park, a police van arrived and blocked the exit from the car park so he couldn't drive away.

"Bentley drove at the van, mounting the curb and driving off down Brading Road.

"Police chased Bentley all the way down to the Ryde Esplanade, through the town, and back again to Small Brook Lane where he was stopped when he crashed into parked cars."

"On August 30 at around 12.30am, police were driving behind Mr Bentley on Clarence Road in Newport where he pulled up at the side of the road.

"Officers following the car thought that it was odd that the car had pulled in there and a scan from the police computer revealed it was registered to a woman named Hilda. Officers could clearly see the car was driven by a man.

"When police turned on their sirens and approached the car, Mr Bentley put it into reverse and moved away at speed before getting out and fleeing on foot.

"He was found hiding in a near by garden where he was confronted by police and was incapacitated by police pepper spray."

Bentley's defence, Oscar Vincent, said: "He tells me that he ran away because he saw the police approaching and didn't know what they wanted with him.

"In both cases, police begin to approach him and Mr Bentley and he panicked and his behavioural issues manifest themselves and he goes into a kind of auto-pilot."

Bentley was released on bail to appear at the IW Crown Court on April 3.
