ISLE of Wight speedway's Barry Bishop has told the County Press that being in self-isolation over coronavirus fears has been 'like being in the movies' at times.

The mainland-based promoter recently returned to the UK after work took him to Thailand and Singapore in February.

Mr Bishop was unable to attend the Isle of Wight Warriors' My First Skid speedway school event at the sport's Ashey stadium this week.

He works from home, which means he leaves the house infrequently during the working day.

However, Mr Bishop admits, "when you're prevented from going out every day, you feel it."

Visiting hospital for tests was something of an experience said Mr Bishop.

He said: "You have to sit in the car till they call you.

"You follow the signs to a small, single hospital room.

"The nurse wears the full hospital scrubs."

Calling his experience so far 'nothing but positive', Mr Bishop is awaiting the results of tests and says he is feeling well.

In Thailand and Singapore hand-sanitiser was required outside all major buildings and visitors' temperatures were taken before they were allowed through the doors.

Mr Bishop says he was given stickers to wear, to mark him clear to enter.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson spoke publicly about the government's plans to control the virus.

Isle of Wight businesses and travel firms have also issued advice.

Meanwhile, football's Sydenhams Wessex league has banned footballers and match officials from shaking hands, including those from the Isle of Wight.
