A MAN who stole two bottles of alcohol from a Newport High Street shop has been ordered to pay for them.

Trevor Jarvis, 49, of Witcombe Road, Newport, pleaded guilty to one count of theft at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Friday.

The court heard how, on January 8, Jarvis walked into B&M Bargains in Newport where he took two bottles of whisky and left without paying.

Prosecutor, Vivian Ducie, said: "This is an incredibly straight forward matter of theft, unfortunately though none of the items were recovered."

For Jarvis, Barry Arnett told the court: "He is a paranoid schizophrenic and he self medicates for his issues by stealing alcohol.

"It was a bad time for him, it was the year anniversary of his mother's death and has now sees a specialist support worker to address these issues."

The magistrates chose to give Jarvis a 12-month community order along with 20 rehabilitation days.
