A SANDOWN man who went on a 'bender' through the town, stealing a friend's car as well as breaking into a workshop, has been jailed.

The Isle of Wight Crown Court on Friday heard how Stefan Lord, 32, of Fort Street, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking, criminal damage, driving without insurance, theft and burglary when he appeared before magistrates on January 29.

Prosecutor, Nicola Talbot-Headley, said: "All these offences took place over the course of one evening, that being January 13.

"Lord visited the former home of a friend where the friend's ex-partner now lives alone. Lord began banging on the back door and demanding to see the friend.

"After being told he no longer lived there, Lord left but returned later on when he smashed a glass pane in the door and proceeded to put his head through the hole telling the occupier that he would pay for the damages.

"The following morning, staff at the Fairway Holiday Park in Sandown awoke to find the door to the workshop had been left open.

"Candyfloss sugar, frozen food and a gas bottle were all missing, as well as a suitcase and a tent.

"Around the same time, a taxi driver discovered one of his vehicles missing.

"Police later discovered the taxi abandoned after it had collided with a parked car in the town.

"Mr Lord is friends with this taxi driver and texted him the next morning telling him that 'he was on a weird one' and that he was going to hand himself in."

Elizabeth Bussey-Jones, for Lord, said: "All these offences occurred one after another in some kind of bender.

"Mr Lord's brother died around about Christmas 2018 and on the anniversary of his death Mr Lord began to drink and slid back into these behaviours."

Lord was jailed for five months and disqualified from driving for 12 months.
