COASTGUARD teams, police and the Isle of Wight Council have been called to Shanklin today ­— after a landslip sent dirt and debris falling onto a road below.

At 2.30pm, Ventnor and Bembridge coastguard rescue teams were called to the scene, with Isle of Wight Police in attendance after a large crowd had gathered in the area.

The unstable cliff edge near Hope Road had begun to collapse, with dirt and debris reported falling onto the footpath and road below.

Police were told a part of the cliff edge near Hope Road Long Stay Car Park and nearby beach huts had fallen, and coastguard teams have since closed the footpath at the top of the cliff.

The Isle of Wight Council is also in attendance.

UPDATE: A spokesperson for Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team said: "We were tasked to several 999 calls of a large cliff fall at Shanklin and persons reported to be beneath the cliff falls.

"We attended the scene alongside Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team and Hampshire Constabulary.

"Safety advice was given and we liased with the local council emergency planning.

"A temporary closure has been placed on revetment and cliff top until the council put in a more formal closures and plans.

"If you see a cliff fall in a public area, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard. Never put yourself in danger."
