Kathleen ‘Katy’ Belcher, retired head teacher at Hunnyhill Primary School, has died peacefully in her care home at the age of 91.

She spent nearly 30 years as head at Hunnyhill, first as head of the infants school and then as head of the combined infants and juniors.

She had been at the school long enough to teach grandchildren of her original pupils!

Katy moved to the Island just before the outbreak of the Second World War, from Broughty Ferry in Scotland, after her father had re-located to find work at J. S. White's Shipyard in Cowes.

Educated at Denmark Road School, Cowes, then at Newport Grammar School, Katy completed her teacher training at Salisbury, returning to the Island to take her first job at Brighstone School.

Katy was married to international yachtsman and local businessman John Belcher, who died in 1986.

The funeral will be held at 12.15pm on Monday, March 2, at All Saints' Church, Gurnard.
