REPORTS are coming in that a woman has been hit by a bus in central Newport his evening.

The casualty is currently being attended to by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.

The accident happened in the South Street area near Morrisons and Thompsons restaurant.

An eye-witness told the County Press a woman pedestrian had been struck.

Police are in attendance.

Southern Vectis said the Route 9 from Ryde at 9.10pm will not be operating due to the accident.

UPDATE 10.15pm: A spokesperson from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service confirmed one female casualty has been taken by ambulance to the Accident and Emergency department of St Mary's Hospital.

UPDATE 7am Sunday: 

Simon Moye, Southern Vectis operations manager, said: “One of our vehicles was involved in an incident in Newport earlier this evening with a pedestrian. 

“The pedestrian was treated by paramedics at the scene, and taken to hospital. At this stage we do not know the extent of their injuries, but we are monitoring their progress and wish them a full and speedy recovery.

“We are providing support for our driver. We are also assisting police as they carry out their enquiries.”
