YEAR three pupils at Lanesend Primary School in Cowes looked to the stars with the help of NASA.

THE Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) lent the school NASA moon rocks and meteorites as part of an education scheme.

The loan was organised by Year 3 teacher, Mrs Gangonells, who said: “Children had the chance to handle meteorites collected from all over the world, as well as rock and dust samples brought back to Earth during the Apollo missions.

"It is much easier to teach concepts such as classification of rocks or orbits of satellites when you have held rocks from outer space.”

Each class was able to book time with the box and each teacher was able to target their teaching appropriately for their age group.

The box was tied in with the children’s learning about space. The school had to apply more than a year in advance to take part.
