A MOTORCYCLIST was caught drink driving — after police pulled him over for speeding.

Self-employed construction worker Lee John Johnson, 34, of Garden Way, Newport, was still over the limit following an all-day drinking session the day before.

He admitted drink driving when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

The court heard he drove his Yamaha motorcycle at Quarr Road, Binstead, while over the limit on January 20. He had an alcohol reading of 78 — more than double the legal limit of 35.

Barry Arnett, defending, said Johnson had been drinking 'all day' the day before — but on the day police stopped him, he had only had one drink.

"It was the classic topping up scenario," he said.

Johnson was disqualified from driving for 18 months.

Ann Smout, prosecuting, said police had their attention drawn to the motorcycle as it was going at excess speed. They followed for a mile before Johnson pulled over.

Presiding magistrate Fay Seabourne said: "We accept that if you knew you were over the limit, you would not have driven."

Johnson was fined £250 and ordered to pay a £32 surcharge and £85 costs.
