AN ELDERLY man with Alzheimer's died six days after hip surgery.

An inquest into the death of Michael Sharratt, 82, heard he died from complications after falling from his sofa and breaking his hip.

On July 25, Mr Sharratt fell twice at his home, at Madeira Road, Totland, and was put to bed by Wight Care staff.

His wife, Barbara Sharratt, called Wight Care a second time as he was still in pain.

He was taken to St Mary's Hospital where it was found he had fractured an area of his hip, known as the neck of femur.

Following surgery, he was discharged to Inglefield Nursing and Residential Home, Totland, where he remained until his death on July 31.

Isle of Wight Coroner Caroline Sumeray concluded Mr Sharratt, a former managing director from Bournemouth who had retired to the Isle of Wight, died as the result of an accident, stemming from a combination of Alzheimer's and old age.

She said: "He was a somewhat frail gentleman who fell not once, but twice, while he was at home.

"Recovering from a broken neck of femur is difficult enough, especially so with dementia."
