A POWER line has come down in Bembridge this morning (Tuesday), blocking the road.

Southern Vectis tweeted traffic was unable to pass the downed line, in Church Street.

It tweeted shortly after 10am that its Route 8 buses would be diverted.

UPDATE 10.35am: Fire crews from Ryde and Shanklin have been called to the scene, after the power line caught on fire.

Local butcher, W.W. Woodford and Son, posted a video on its Facebook page and said firefighters had evacuated the shop.

It said: "Our Bembridge store is currently closed due to a power line fire next to the building, firefighters have insisted that the shop is evacuated whilst work to control the fire is underway.

"We will update our page when we are able to re-open the shop, but with the shop having been built in 1919 and with a metal roof — the safety of our staff and customers is paramount."

UPDATE 2.17pm: The scene has now been made safe. A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said: "A live cable had fallen in the road. Crews isolated it and cordoned off the area to await the arrival of SSE engineers."

Crews also reported that some people had put themselves at risk by ignoring the cordon.
