A GIRLGUIDING leader from the Isle of Wight has received the royal seal of approval.

Harriet Townsend, leader at 11th Newport Guides and assistant leader at several other units, has received the prestigious Queen’s Guide Award.

Returning to the Island after graduating from university and travelling, Harriet was keen to return to girlguiding.

She said: “The welcome back was amazing.

"However, I felt a bit low and lost about what to do with myself, when someone mentioned the Queen’s Guide Award."

Harriet realised she would have to act quickly to complete the award criteria before the deadline, her 26th birthday.

She said: "Looking back, I am so proud and glad I decided to give it a go.

"When I handed in my completed booklet, three days before my birthday, I was so happy.”

The award comprises five main challenges. Harriet opted walk the length of Hadrian's Wall, take a brownie pack on holiday, organise a carnival day and attend a residential event at Foxlease.

“I didn't know any of the other 60 participants. We were put into teams to carry out tasks, such as a ready, steady, cook challenge.

"I had a lovely weekend with other leaders, I learnt new songs and games and made new friends.

"I loved every minute of my Queen’s Guide experience, I am so happy to have completed it.

"A huge thank you to everyone who supported and helped me with this award."

Harriet was presented with her award by Girlguiding Isle of Wight commissioners Lesley Clifford and Shirley Saunders.
