A MAN who smeared his own excrement across the walls of a cell at Newport police station said he was 'thoroughly ashamed of himself.'

Reese Kemp, 22, of Collingwood Road, Newport, appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, where he admitted one count of criminal damage and and a further charge of assaulting an emergency worker.

The court heard he was arrested following a domestic incident on December 29 and taken into custody.

Prosecutor, Ann Smout, said: "Mr Kemp was clearly agitated, telling officers he was going to kill them and that he had done nothing wrong. He struck out, kicking one of the officers.

"At the police station, Kemp proceeded to defecate on the floor before wiping it on the cell walls.

"He also urinated on the floor."

The court heard Kemp had been watching football at a Newport pub before returning home, and the police were called after he argued with his brother.

Barry Arnett, defending, said: "My client is thoroughly ashamed and upset with himself.

"He had drunk too much and was going through a difficult time, but realised in the cold light of day the police officers were only trying to do their jobs.

"He admits he made a protest that was unacceptable."

Addressing the court, Kemp, said: "I apologise, I couldn't remember a thing afterwards.

"It was a moment of madness and I am prepared to make an apology to the officer I kicked."

Kemp was given a 12-month community order, including 25 rehabilitation activity days.

He was ordered to pay £400 compensation, court costs of £85 and a £90 surcharge.
