CROWDS queued in the rain to be the first into the popular Shanklin Rotary Club's annual charity sale.

It was opened today by district governor of Rotary Wessex, Lawrence Tristram, at Lower Hyde, Shanklin.

Last year, the sale raised nearly £40,000 and all the proceeds go to local, national and international good causes.

Rotarian John Fleming said: "It was very busy today considering the weather. We were inundated.

"People queued in the rain — I did admire them — and we have about 20 volunteers who help, plus helpers from Men in Sheds, the rowing club and the rugby club, it's brilliant.

"We've got plenty of stuff here, I've never seen so many clothes or so much furniture."

There are different areas including gardening, electricals, books and household items.

The sale runs until Saturday, January 25. It is not open on the Sundays or Mondays.

It is open daily from 10am to 4pm, but will close at 1pm on the final day.

There is free entry and parking.
