A VAN driver was arrested on suspicion of drug driving following a police chase through Cowes yesterday (Sunday) — after he crashed the vehicle and tried to flee on foot.

The white van failed to stop for police at Pallance Road, Northwood, sparking a chase that ended at Arctic Road, Cowes, when he ploughed into a set of gates at Isle of Wight Aggregates.

An Isle of Wight police spokesperson said: "The driver left the vehicle but was subsequently arrested by officers.

"The driver was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, possession of an offensive weapon, drug driving and possession with intent to supply a class A drug.

"He remains in custody at this time."

UPDATE 11.12am: Police have confirmed the offensive weapon was an axe.

UPDATE TUESDAY 1.33pm: An Isle of Wight police spokesperson said the driver had been released without charge, but remains under investigation.
