AN ACCIDENT overnight has led to the closure of a major Isle of Wight road.

The road through Arreton from Branstone Cross to Downend has been closed by Isle of Wight Police.

The number of vehicles and casualties is unknown at this stage, although a number of emergency services were in attendance.

The crash happened at around 11.35pm and Shanklin Fire Station sent one engine to assist police and ambulance with lighting and fuel clearance.

Southern Vectis is unable to serve the area with its Route 8 buses this morning.

The bus operator tweeted: "Police have closed the road between Arreton Barns and the Fighting Cocks due to a late night RTI. Buses will divert from Downend Road to Merstone/Godshill and Canteen Rd to Amazon World in both directions until further notice."

UPDATE 10am:

St Mary's Hospital has confirmed the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was deployed in the early hours, and flew a patient to the major trauma unit at Southampton General.

The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service also sent a frontline ambulance and a car to the scene, near Hale Common.

There is still no information on the number of casualties or number of vehicles involved.

UPDATE 11.24pm: Police have confirmed a 19-year-old female has died in the crash and are appealing for witnesses. It was a single-vehicle collision.
