SEVERAL fire crews rushed to The Bay CE School this evening after being alerted about a possible fire — but stood down when it was discovered the smoke was coming from a nearby bonfire.
Crews from Shanklin, Sandown, Ryde and Newport fire stations were mobilised at 8.27pm to the Sandown school, but a stop message came through at 8.54pm.
A spokesperson from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service tweeted: "Fortunately first impressions suggest no fire at the school but further investigations are on going to double check."
It has since been confirmed there was no fire at the school.
