THE second annual Ryde Inshore Rescue (RIR) New Year's Day swim took place at Appley on the first morning of 2020, with numbers increased substantially from the previous year.

A total of 66 swimmers were presented with a safety briefing upon arrival, subsequently charging into the sea, triggered by a cannon fired at 2.30pm by renowned local pirate, Captain Nash.

Donations on the day amounted to £284 — both the money raised and number of participants virtually doubling from the previous year.

Martin Osborne, RIR secretary, said: “All the team are very grateful to the wonderful swimmers who took part in our event this year. "Many thanks to our organisational team of Ken Matthews and Amy Cheetham, and the crew who oversaw the safety of all the swimmers.

"It was a wonderful day that brought the local community together.

"We look forward to next year's swim.”

The action unfolded on the beach in front of the RIR base. Anyone wishing to get involved with the 2021 edition, or assist the group in other ways, can email secretary@rydeinshorerescue.com
