A TAILOR has hung up his tape for the final time following 60 years of dapper service.

John Crosswell, 76, began his career in the industry as part of the Fareham branch of family business Silver's of Reading at 15 years old.

He immediately caught the attention of the head office, and by 20 he had relocated to the Berkshire town — becoming branch manager within six months.

As fashion continued to evolve, so did John, joining Fields on the Isle of Wight, where he worked closely with Phillip Woodford, the director of the Newport-based business.

He said: "The shop has been very successful, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my 41 years of service as a manager and window dresser.

"Not many people can say they have loved their work, but I am one of the fortunate few who found my vocation from an early age.

"Now I am ready to enjoy the next chapter of my life."

John intends to celebrate his retirement by exploring the Isle of Wight, supporting his beloved Southampton Football Club, and helping local causes.

He said: "I used to go to the ice rink in Ryde to watch the Raiders play, and think it's really important for the young people that it comes back.

"I have great admiration for the ice dancers who travel off the Island to practice and perform. Their dedication is fantastic.

"I am proud to have had the career I have, and proud to live on such a beautiful Island — now I'll have the time to enjoy everything it offers."

A spokesperson for Fields said: "John has worked with us for more than 45 years, forging close relationships with staff and customers alike, and bringing a wealth of experience into the menswear trade on the Island.

"The family and staff of Fields Menswear wish John all the very best for his retirement."
