A CAR with possible Isle of Wight origins was the unlikely star of the show when Top Gear aired its Nepal special at Christmas.

The trio of presenters — Paddy McGuinness, Chris Harris and Freddie Flintoff — undertook a challenge to drive through Nepal, taking on a car each.

Harris chose a Renault 4 and the number plate D513 FDL suggests the vehicle had origins on the Isle of Wight.

For virtually all of the 20th century the DL vehicle registration number plates were an important part of the identity of the Isle of Wight.

The plate on the Renault 4 was first used in 1966.

Unfortunately, although the car provided arguably the biggest laughs on the BBC show, it did not win the challenge.

County Press reader Andre L'Hours suggests: "1966 is the year when D was a number plate suffix not a prefix. The car is left-hand drive.

"The DVLA website shows date of first registration January 1987. Date of first registration with DVLA November 2018.

"So, probably bought in France and imported to the UK in November 2018 and given a registration appropriate for its year of manufacture."
