THIS morning's much-anticipated Boxing Day clash between East Cowes Vics and Newport has been called off following heavy rain overnight.

The Sydenhams Wessex Division 1 derby at Beatrice Avenue, East Cowes, was called off this morning following a pitch inspection.

It follows the postponement of matches that were scheduled for last weekend for both clubs on the same pitch.

"Despite yesterday's dry, sunny weather, and the fact five hours of work had been done on the pitch, which has good drainage, the overnight rain was enough to finish it," said Vics club secretary, Daz Dyer.

"Vics manager, Richie Woodburn, was one of those helping to get the pitch playable for today. We even had EFL referee, James Linington (an Isle of Wight resident), take a look at the pitch, for his opinion.

"I would imagine the game will be rescheduled for a bank holiday, probably on Easter Monday, but it depends on the league."
