A SHANKLIN man committed a series of offences while under the influence of alcohol — including punching a police officer — a court heard.

Alan James Whiteman, 44, of Victoria Avenue, admitted stealing a large quantity of items worth £174.83 from the Co-op in Shanklin, and items worth £13.50 from Poundland, also in Shanklin, on November 18, when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court.

He also admitted using threatening words or behaviour towards two people on the same day.

He further admitted stealing a bottle of wine from Londis, Shanklin, and assaulting police officer Michael Godley by beating on November 30.

Ann Smout, prosecuting, said PC Godley was punched in the face by Whiteman when he attended the shop to deal with the theft.

A report by the probation service stated Whiteman appeared to be struggling with an alcohol issue.

Judge Anthony Callaway gave Whiteman a 12-month community order to include 15 rehabilitation days.
