NEWPORT pulled off the result of the day in Division 1 of the Sydenhams Wessex League by beating high-flying Hythe and Dibden at Beatrice Avenue.

In an open, entertaining, end-to-end game, the Islanders opened the scoring with just a minute on the clock through striker, Jordan Browne.

A free kick on the edge of the opposition box hit the wall, but his follow up strike took a wicked deflection and flew into the top corner.

The visitors equalised on 16 minutes with a close range strike, following some sloppy Port defending.

Out of the blue, Newport restored their lead when a defensive mix-up saw the keeper score a crazy own goal just after the hour mark.

Newport matched their quality opposition all areas of the pitch in what was a good mix of grit and determination, with much quality to admire, particularly from Connor Kelly and Liam Triggs.

Port came under the cosh in spells, particularly towards the end, but thanks to some last-ditch defending and good keeping by Gary Streeter, they held on to win 2-1.

Newport move up two places to eighth.

Division 1 rivals, struggling East Cowes Vics, earned a useful point away at Downton.

Vics equalised twice - the first from Jimmi Burton and the second, at the death, from new signing, Jez Conway, to make it 2-2.

Cowes Sports were bashed 3-0 away at Bashley and slip to second bottom, without their nearest rivals having to play.

Whitecroft and Barton Sports hammered Bembridge 5-1 at home in Division 1 of the Harwoods Renault Isle of Wight League.

The win gives them a ten-point gap over nearest rivals Brading Town, who have played three games less.
