A DECISION on whether to allow an ice rink and multi-indoor sports centre will be made by the Isle of Wight Council next week.

The planning committee will meet on Tuesday, to decide whether to give the project the green light. It has been recommended for refusal.

SILC, the team behind the application, hopes to create an indoor sports centre near Smallbrook Stadium, and bring ice skating back to the Island.

The deadline for comments on the application was in November, but the team has issued a press release urging people to continue to write to their local councillors on the matter, to let them know how much support there is for the project.

It said: "Have your say, we as a community can drive the right decision for the next generation on the Island.

"A local resident and community group have chosen to pioneer a not-for-profit, affordable all-year-round indoor facility for our Island.

"Why? For the opportunity to inspire activity for everyone.

"With the lack of indoor sporting facilities, we hope that Island Roads and the councillors give their support to this project, located on land used previously as a sporting venue, working together to overcome infrastructure and accessibility issues, and put the health of our community at the forefront of their discussions.

"Please show your support, write to your councillor and let them know our community is in favour of improving fitness and mental wellbeing and to have the opportunity to lead active lives.

"Share your stories on how your children are having to go to the mainland to continue their sporting dreams or how they will benefit from this facility."

The proposed facility will include tennis courts, multi-use courts for basketball, netball and badminton, a large climbing wall, trampolining, indoor football, a café/bar, and a children’s activity centre, as well as the ice rink.
