YARMOUTH was packed on Saturday as the town switched on its Christmas tree lights and held its annual Carols in the Square concert.

The community singing was led by the Slipshod Singers and friends, children from both Yarmouth and Shalfleet Schools and accompanied by the Isle of Wight Salvation Army Band directed by Captain Rodney Bean.

Master of Ceremonies was Kevin Shaw and there were readings from Yarmouth School children Annie Goodall, Izy Bishop and Toby Byers and Shalfleet's Effie Whittle.

Mayor of Yarmouth Steve Cowley and this year's Spirit of Carnival Hope Giles switch on the lights with the help of the schoolchildren.

The event was organised by the Yarmouth Carnival Committee and its chair, Jen Allen, said: "It was a lovely evening and we were very lucky with the weather because that brought out the crowds.

"It all made for a wonderful atmosphere and the children helped to make it special for everyone."

The event was in aid of Mountbatten.
