FIRE crews were called to St Mary's Hospital this afternoon (Wednesday) after the smell of burning raised alarms.

Crews from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to St Mary's Hospital at 3.45pm.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "We were called to St Mary's Hospital after someone reported that they could smell burning.

"Two appliances from Newport Fire Station were sent, but they quickly found there was no fire.

"The smell of burning had come from an external source and was not related to the hospital."
