THE ISLE of Wight Council has issued a warning to residents as temperatures are set to drop later this week.

The Met Office has also warned there is a 60 per cent probability of severe cold weather between 6am tomorrow (Tuesday) and 9am on Thursday, December 5.

The council has warned vulnerable residents could be at risk as the temperatures drop to near freezing point.

A spokesperson said: "The Isle of Wight Council has robust and tested cold weather emergency arrangements in place.

"Island Roads monitors the weather accordingly to ensure that key main roads are gritted and kept clear.

"However, the best advice is to make sure in adverse weather conditions, you only go out if really necessary and keep warm in your homes and check on vulnerable neighbours, such as the ill and the elderly."

The gritters will be out tonight (Monday).
