ISLAND police have arrested a man in Newport this morning (Monday) as part of a crackdown on drink drivers.

Police confirmed a 34-year-old man was arrested on Lugley Street and has been charged with drink driving.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Police said: "As part of our month-long Operation Holly campaign targeting drink and drug drivers, we stopped a 34-year-old man at 10.24am on Lugley Street in Newport today.

"He has now been charged with drink-driving."

Operation Holly is set to target drivers on the Isle of Wight between December 1 and January 1, in a crackdown on the destruction and distress caused by collisions involving those under the influence.

Police said the message of the campaign was 'it's not worth the risk' and warned drivers not to drink alcohol or take drugs then get behind the wheel.

UPDATE 10am:

A spokesperson for Isle of Wight Police said: "Officers stopped a red Ford Focus in Lugley Street yesterday morning.

"A man was arrested and has been charged with driving while over the alcohol limit.

"Daniel McArthur, 34, of Bailey Close, Ryde, is due to appear before the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on December 17, 2019."
