A MEMORIAL has been unveiled in Sandown to commemorate the animals that died in the First World War.

The Bay CE School's Community Kids have worked hard for three years on the project, which culminated in a recent unveiling.

The wooden sculpture sits in pride of place at the Broadway Centre.

The Community Kids meet once a week with the aim of making their town and school a brighter place to live.

As part of the memorial project, the children planted a wild battlefield memorial at Osborne House and planted a tree for the parks and gardens men who worked at Osborne but did not return from the war.

They also went to London to plant trees and lay crosses at the arboretum and meet Chelsea Pensioners.

The children have undertaken work at Sandown Railway Station, plating beds, tubs and hanging baskets.

They also look after the gardens at The Briars Residential Home.
