IT WAS an integral part of the Island's road network for decades — but now the iconic St Mary's Roundabout is no more.

This picture, taken by HSS Hire, shows the latest stage of the development, which is set to remove the roundabout completely and replace it with a junction controlled by traffic lights.

The works started at the end of September and are scheduled to last 15 months, until December 2020.

This week, the diggers have moved in and removed the centre of the roundabout, taking it back to ground level.

The current phase of works should finish on December 20, when the scheme will be paused for a Christmas break.
