FRESHWATER Independent Lifeboat (FILB) was launched today (Sunday), after two kayakers were spotted struggling to reach land.

The team was paged by Solent Coastguard at 4.32pm, with crew arriving on the scene at 4.40pm, and D-Class launched shortly afterwards.

A spokesperson for FILB said: "Initial reports by Needles NCI suggested two kayakers were having difficulties approaching Scratchell's Bay. It was reported that one was towing the other.

"Upon approaching Scratchell's, a crew member spotted some light a little further along. After signalling with torch, the individual responded, and contact was made."

FILB crew members spoke with the kayakers, and identified they were competent and fully equipped with lifejackets and relevant safety devices.

Both kayakers were unhurt and fully coherent.

Satisfied that the situation had been resolved, Solent Coastguard stood down FILB, and D-Class returned to the boathouse for a 5.08pm recovery.
