FIRE crews were called to HMP Isle of Wight last night (Monday) after prison workers raised the alarm.

Crews from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to a fire in a cell at 11.30pm.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "We sent two appliances, one from Newport and another from Cowes.

"Upon arrival, the staff at the prison had managed to put the fire out themselves so fire crews just assisted in making further safety checks."
