A VENTNOR man admitted affray after he threw himself against the window of a seafront restaurant.

Teal Howitt, 19, of Mitchell Avenue, Ventnor, appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court recently.

The court heard how Howitt, along with a youth who cannot be named for legal reasons, began throwing themselves against the window of the Met, on Ventnor Esplanade.

Prosecutor, Ann Smout, said: "On the evening of May 31, a couple who had finished eating at the restaurant, were paying their bill when Howitt and another teenager began to bang on the glass.

"They began throwing themselves against the windows so hard that a few of the diners said they saw the frame begin to bow.

"The man and a member of staff went out to confront the teenagers. They were met with abuse and attacked by Howitt and the youth.

"The man and the member of staff backed back into the restaurant, but the pair followed and continued to fight.

"Howitt and the man began to wrestle on the ground, and the youth broke a bottle over the man's head.

"As Howitt and the youth left the restaurant, they threw chairs about as they left."

Howitt's defence, Barry Arnett, said: "The court will have seen from the report, that this is a very immature 19-year-old man.

"That night he had taken some medication that had not actually been prescribed to him and he had been drinking.

"He has anxiety, but that's been getting better now he is actually prescribed something for it, and no longer feels the urge to self-medicate.

"He is a young and somewhat vulnerable man and I would be extremely concerned about his wellbeing in a custodial environment."

The magistrates gave Howitt a 12-week custodial sentence suspended for 12 months.

He was ordered to pay court costs of £85 and a surcharge of £32.

The youth was dealt with separately.
