LOOK at the size of those pumpkins!

Arreton Barns farm shop Farmer Jack's held its 12th annual heaviest pumpkin competition on Saturday — with the winning pumpkin weighing a record-breaking 305kg.

Five people took part in the event, with the spoils going to Mark Wells and his colossal grey pumpkin.

The runners-up were Roger Coombes, with his 193kg pumpkin, and Steve Dimmock, whose pumpkin tipped the scales at 160kg.

Emma South’s 86kg entry avoided the wooden spoon — with that dubious honour reserved for the farm shop's own Stuart Pierce, who propped up the rear with a disappointing 55kg, for which he cited a lack of time and care.

Stuart said: “I started growing the pumpkin with the best intentions and then got side-tracked by doing the cherry and apricot harvesting, leaving the poor thing to fend for itself.

“To grow something like Mark did takes incredible dedication, it’s the biggest pumpkin we’ve ever weighed here.”

As well as the weigh-in, the day included various other pumpkin related activities including an exhibition of carving and the quaffing of copious amounts of pumpkin soup.

Farmer Jack's are offering free giant pumpkin seeds for those interested in entering the event next year.
