VETERANS and youth groups paraded through Cowes to launch the Isle of Wight's annual poppy appeal.

Hundreds of people attended Saturday's parade to the seafront war memorial, wearing poppies in memory of those who gave their lives for their country.

Marching alongside veterans were the Vectis Corps of Drums Marching Band and Cowes British Legion Band, and young cadets who handed out poppies.

Riders accompanied the standard bearers as they made their way through the town.

A service was led by Rev Andrew Poppe and a two minutes' silence was observed.

Mayor of Cowes, Cllr Lora Peacey-Wilcox, gave an address, and Cllr Ian Ward, who served in the army, recited the Exhortation. High Sheriff Geoff Underwood also attended.

The event was organised by the Cowes branch of the Royal British Legion, which provides lifelong support to serving and former members of the armed forces and their families.
