PAN allotment holders have grown some truly gargantuan pumpkins this year.

Green — or orange — fingered gardeners outdid themselves at the contest, and the fruits of their labours were clear to see when the pumpkins were harvested on Sunday.

Competition organiser, and overall winner, was Roger Coombes.

Roger, who also supplied the prizes, said of his prizewinning pumpkin: “It weighed in at more than 400lbs. It's the largest I’ve grown, almost double last year's 237lb pumpkin.

"The world record is more than 2,600lbs, so I have a way to go to catch that.

“My dad taught me how to grow fruit and vegetables when I was young, and I’ll take the seeds from this one to use for next year’s competition.

“This pumpkin will end up going to Monkey Haven — the monkeys absolutely love to eat it.”

The annual competition will be open to all Newport allotment holders next year, with the 2020 date due to be announced in January.

Roger's first place pumpkin weighed 429lbs. Mike Winter came second, with a 238lb pumpkin, and Phil Long third, with a 200lb monster.

Syria Townsend won the children's category, with a 95lb pumpkin.
