WALK the Wight with Mountbatten award winners said they were inspired to take part after the Isle of Wight charity supported their loved ones.

As reported, a ceremony was held at the Newport hospice last Thursday, where awards were presented to the oldest and youngest people to complete the 29th annual walk, those who raised the most money and the walkers with the best fancy dress.

There was even a 'top dog' award for the pups who took part.

The winners included three women, dubbed The Jesters, who won the award for best fancy dress.

Jester Pauline Peach said: "We dress up as something different every year. We've done it for the last 15 years, since a friend of mine died at the hospice, and we make our own costumes."

The top dog award went to pups Mr Blue and Molly, joined by their owner David Quinn.

He said: "This is dedicated to my wife. She died in February, so we decided to do Walk the Wight. We had t-shirts printed and got the dogs involved.

"My wife died at home, but she went through Mountabatten. Throughout everything, they helped transform our lives.

"Next year is the 30th walk, and I'm hoping to get another 30 people involved and raise more money."

The Ryde Lions Cup for the best team effort in the flat walk went to four Girlguides.

Guide Tessa Bryson, 13, said: "We did it because our guide leader was really ill — she's still with us but we wanted to show our appreciation and how much we love her. We also did it for all the other people who weren't as fortunate as her.

"The walk was so tiring. I literally kissed the one mile sign."

The achievement award went to Steve Wright, who died of cancer, aged 47, shortly after the event.

He completed most of the walk in his wheelchair but walked across the finish line, even though he had broken the back of his pelvis and two parts of his spine.
