CONCERNS were raised for a kayaker spotted half a mile out to sea in failing light this afternoon.

Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team was called to Sandown beach to assist if needed.

The kayaker, a male, was kept under observation until he reached the shore. He got back safely.

It was a busy day for the coastguard team, who spent most of the day at Yaverland guarding the public from a Second World War hand grenade, which was detonating by bomb disposal experts at around 5pm.

Shortly after returning to station at around 5.30pm, they were tasked back to Sandown following concerns for the kayaker.
