A RECORD number of runners took part in the Nettlestone Rat Race, raising money for the primary school and its chosen charity.

Around 170 runners took part in Sunday's event, now in its fourth year, competing in a five mile, 5k or 600m race.

It raised more than £1,500 from entries online alone, with proceeds going to the school and Ability Dogs 4 Young People.

"It was a fantastic day, raising a lot of money for two great causes," said PE teacher and racing director Sam Cleare.

"We had a record number of runners — about 60 more than last year — and we're hoping to break the 200 barrier next year.

"We invested in a colourful new medal this time, with a rainbow ribbon, which was very coveted."

The event has grown from strength to strength, attracting 40 runners in its first year, and doubling its numbers almost every year since.

Ability Dogs had a stall on the day, as did medal sponsor, TJ's Gym and Fitness Studio. Staff were on hand giving massages in exchange for donations.

Adam Tuck, of Ryde Harriers, won the gold in the five-mile race, clocking in at 30mins and 59secs.

Trever Mcallister, also of Ryde Harriers, and Richard Bezer, of the Isle of Wight Road Runners, placed second and third with times of 35mins 23secs and 37mins 4secs, respectively.

Promising ten-year-old athlete Christopher D'arcy emerged victorious in the 5k race, with a time of 26mins 6secs.

Christopher's father, Rob, finished a second later, and fellow student, Myles Bradley, ten, clinched third place with a time of 28mins 59secs.

In the U11 600m race, Isabelle Bounds scooped the gold, with Dexter Robson coming second and Archie Bezer finishing third.

All the routes took runners off site, incorporating off road sections and a run along the seafront at Seaview.

All the finishers were presented with a medal, and prizes were raffled off at the end of the run.
