A DRINK driver who crashed on to the Racecourse Roundabout has appeared in court.

Samuel Corney, 24, of Ashey Road, Ryde, appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, where he admitted drink driving.

He crashed his car on September 30, having approached the roundabout, near Whippingham, at speed, causing him to mount the roundabout and become stuck.

Prosecutor Vivian Ducie said: "At 12.40am police were alerted to reports of a single vehicle collision on the A3054.

"When they arrived they saw a single man who had driven his car on to the roundabout and was unable to get it off again.

"He admitted to police he had been unable to stop as he had been going too fast as he approached the junction.

"To his credit he could not have been more cooperative with the police."

Corney's defence, Liz Miller, said: "The car was a write-off as a result of the crash.

"He said he had been at the pub for a couple of pints and had lost track.

"As a result, from now on his girlfriend will kindly have to drive him to and from work. "He is truly sorry for what he has done and he fully accepts he will need to be punished."

Corney was given a 20-month ban from driving and ordered to pay a fine of £450.

He was also ordered to pay court costs of £85 and a surcharge of £41.
